Students are invited to wear their PINK shirt on Wednesday, February 26th
What is Pink Shirt Day?
Pink Shirt Day is observed in Canada on the last Wednesday of February every year. This year Pink Shirt Day will take place on Wednesday, February 26, 2025. The day is dedicated to raising awareness about the harmful effects of bullying and promoting a culture of kindness, empathy and inclusivity. On this day, people across the country wear pink shirts to show their support for creating safe and respectful environments in schools, workplaces and communities. The inspiration behind Pink Shirt Day came from two grade 12 high school students in Nova Scotia. After witnessing a grade 9 student being bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school, they wanted to make a point that bullying is wrong. Together, they purchased and distributed 75 pink shirts and accessories to fellow students
from their school. By the end of the week, most of the students at the school were wearing pink to show their support for this grade 9 student. Their act of solidarity became a symbol of standing up against bullying and promoting a message of acceptance and understanding. In fact, Pink Shirt Day has become a significant date throughout most
schools, businesses and community organizations in over 100 countries. Pink Shirt Day is not only about wearing a coloured shirt but also about standing together as a united front against bullying. It reminds us that we all have a role to play in creating environments where everyone feels safe, valued and free from fear. The day also gives hope in that it only took two kind and creative high school students’ actions to start this amazing observance which continues to make a difference in the lives in so many today. By participating in Pink Shirt Day, Canadians send a powerful message that bullying has no place in our communities and that kindness and respect are essential values that can help us build a more compassionate and harmonious society for everyone.
